Maps and Cartography
The study of maps and cartography help us to understand the world in which we live, and the world beyond what we can see around us. They help us understand events of the past, allow us to navigate in the present, and facilitate planning for the future. Maps help us learn about the spatial relationships of important features on planet earth including bodies of navigable water, mountain ranges, plateaus, piedmonts, and great plains. We have learned to map the features of our oceans, the peaks of our mountains, and even our caves. In maps, we can learn about countries around the world, cultures, customs, and languages. We can even learn about the celestial bodies of the Heavens above.
Browse and enjoy the collection of maps below, and be sure to make this also a part of your practical life planning. Printed maps can visually place us in an identifiable and understandable position relative to our surroundings, and help us navigate from one place to another. Although we have come to rely heavily on convenient access to technology-based GPS systems, these are not always accurate, and may be compromised by solar weather including solar flares, changes in the earth’s magnetic field, acts of terrorism, and acts of war. Be sure to keep up-to-date road maps and atlas’ for your city, state, region, and the country available in your vehicles and at home.
